Best Time to Visit East Africa National Parks
Recommended time to visit East Africa for Wildebeest Migration.
The best time to visit Africa for the great wildebeest migration is between July and October. Both the Serengeti and Masai Mara experience busy activities with more than 1 million wildebeests and zebras migrating across their plains in search of pasture, and follow their biological clock.
But there are other amazing months when the wildebeest migration is perfect to see them. As much as July to October are eventful, thrilling, and exciting, in January to March is when you witness life start in Ndutu and South Serengeti. More than 8000+ calves are born daily, with amazing big cat activities.
November to March
This season is when the wildebeest are moving from the Masai Mara, and the majority of the herds are in the northern Serengeti headed to Seronera, Central Serengeti. They aim to arrive in Ndutu in January. Calving is witnessed in January, and intensifies in February, and starts to end in March before starting to march back up north again.
The rains are substantial between the months of November and March, which is perfect for raising the calves before their annual journey starts.
April to June
From April to June, is when the long journey up north starts for all the wildebeests and zebras. These include even the young calves born in February and March. They match through Seronera and Serengeti North, then enter the Masai Mara. During these months, they move to Seronera, then to Ikom, and later to Grumeti Reserve.
July to October
The busiest and most vibrant season is between July and October of each year. The infested Mara River, receives more than 1 million wildebeests and zebras, bringing great fortunes to the crocs and other scavengers of the plains. The river crossings seen at both ends are so dramatic, making it look so amazing and thrilling at the same time. July to October is the best time to visit Serengeti and Masai Mara for wildebeest migration and crossings.
