Serengeti Central, also known as the Seronera Valley, is the heart of Serengeti National Park and one of the best wildlife viewing areas in Africa. It is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino) and a large concentration of predators, particularly lions, cheetahs, and leopards.
Seronera serves as a year round safari destination, but it becomes especially exciting between April and June, as well as October to December, when the Great Wildebeest Migration passes through. Thousands of wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles move through the region, attracting predators and creating dramatic wildlife encounters. The area’s permanent water sources, including the Seronera River, ensure that wildlife remains abundant even outside the migration periods, making it an excellent choice for game drives throughout the year.
Wildebeest Migration in Serengeti Central
Serengeti Central plays a key role in the Great Migration, acting as a transition zone where the herds move through during their northward and southward journeys.
April to June: After calving in the Southern Serengeti, the herds begin migrating north toward the Western Corridor and Grumeti River, passing through Central Serengeti. This period sees dramatic river crossings and frequent predator action.
October to December: The herds return from the Maasai Mara in Kenya, moving south through the Seronera Valley toward their calving grounds in Ndutu. This is another exciting period for witnessing large herds and predator-prey interactions.
Unlike other parts of the Serengeti, Central Serengeti provides excellent wildlife sightings year round due to its diverse habitats and reliable water sources.
