Nyerere National Park, formerly part of the vast Selous Game Reserve, is the largest national park in Africa, covering over 30,000 square kilometers. Located in southeastern Tanzania, this sprawling wilderness is named after the country’s founding father, Julius Nyerere. The park remains one of the most untouched and remote areas in East Africa, offering an authentic safari experience far removed from crowds.
The park is home to a staggering variety of wildlife, including some of Africa’s largest populations of elephants, buffalo, and hippos, as well as lions, leopards, hyenas, crocodiles, and the endangered African wild dogs. The Rufiji River, which cuts through the heart of the park, creates lush floodplains, oxbow lakes, and networks of lagoons that support thriving birdlife and aquatic animals. Nyerere is also ideal for walking and boat safaris, activities rarely offered elsewhere, making it a uniquely immersive destination.
