A newly born wildebeest calf was observed in the Ndutu area of the Southern Serengeti shortly after birth. The calf was seen attempting to stand for the first time, unsteady on its legs and falling several times, a normal and critical stage for newborn wildebeest.
Immediately after birth, calves must gain strength quickly. In the Southern Serengeti, where calving takes place in open plains, calves often stand and begin walking within minutes. This rapid development helps reduce the risk from predators, while the mother remains close, watchful, and protective during these vulnerable first moments.
This sighting confirms that calving has begun in Ndutu, marking the start of one of the most important phases of the Great Migration cycle in the Southern Serengeti.
