Why Visit Kenya For Safaris
Reasons to Book A Wildebeest Migration Safari in Kenya
The experience of visiting Kenya during the Great Migration of Wildebeest is considered to be the epitome of all safari experiences in Africa. The Great Migration, also known as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” is an annual spectacle in which 1.5 million wildebeest, 250,000 zebras, and hundreds of thousands of gazelles migrate to the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.
The animals migrate throughout the year, but the Maasai Mara in Kenya provides the most dramatic experience.
Why Kenya is the Ultimate Migration Destination
The Iconic Mara River Crossings
The greatest challenge for the herds lies ahead between July and October, when they have to cross the Mara River. The best place to experience this thrilling experience is in Kenya, where the animals make the perilous journey down the steep banks of the Mara River into the waters inhabited by crocodiles. The experience is raw, emotional, and unparalleled.
Unbeatable Big Cats Action
The migration also forms a “moving buffet” for Kenya’s large carnivores. The Maasai Mara is home to the highest concentration of lions in Africa, as well as substantial populations of cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas. During this period, the predators will be in action as they feed on the large herds.
One of the greatest advantages of choosing Kenya as a destination is the presence of High Wildlife Density and Accessibility within the Maasai Mara. The fact that the Maasai Mara covers an area of about 1,510 km2, which is significantly smaller in comparison to the 14,763 km2 of Tanzania’s Serengeti, ensures that the wildlife, including the migrating herds, is concentrated in a much smaller space.
High Wildlife Density & Accessibility
The result is that it is much easier to track and locate these animals, ensuring a highly efficient safari experience. For those on a tighter schedule, it ensures that you can see a staggering number of different species, including the Big Five, in a short space of time, making Kenya an excellent choice for a 3 to 5-day migration safari.

January to March in 2026 and 2027
From January to March season is one of the perfect times we recommend you visit Kenya for your safari. The presence of big cats and other game is abundant.
During this season, the wildebeest migration is in the Ndutu Conservation Area, where most of them have converged for their annual biological obligation, which is wildebeest calving or wildebeest birthing. The temperatures in Ndutu are favorable. They share the same as Serengeti National Park.
January (as well as February), however, is the hottest time of year in Kenya. Generally, January is hot and humid, falling during our green season, so named for the rich, lush, green landscapes (perfect for photography!). Occasional rainfall provides a welcome respite from the heat.
April to June location in 2026 and 2027
In the April to June season, Kenya experiences the long rains that start at the end of March or early April and last through the end of May or mid-June. These long rains affect so many safari destinations in Kenya, such as the Masai Mara, Amboseli, and Samburu, due to either flooding or inaccessible roads.
It’s the perfect time if you are looking to just relax, enjoy the camps and lodges’ amenities and activities, with not much outdoor activities such as game drives. It’s also the perfect time to enjoy the slow travel slogan, as you will immerse into nature fully.
The wildebeest migration is still in Serengeti, moving upwards in Seronera and the upper Central Serengeti region. Follow our herdtracker app for more updates to track the wildebeest migration in real time.
