The herds are sighted in Mareu, a quiet and less crowded area in the western part of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. It’s not as famous as other parts like Seronera or the Mara River, but it’s one of the best places to see the Great Wildebeest Migration, especially around June and early July. During this time, huge herds of wildebeest gather here as they move west, heading toward the Grumeti River in search of water and fresh grass. The land in Mareu is a mix of open plains, small hills, and scattered trees. This makes it a great area for wildlife viewing because you can spot animals from a distance. It’s also home to many predators like lions, hyenas, and leopards who follow the herds.
From Nairobi or Arusha, you can catch a short flight to one of the nearby airstrips like Sasakwa or Grumeti, most camps will arrange transfers directly from there. If you’re up for the full road trip experience, you can drive in from Arusha, but be ready for bumpy, dusty roadshttps://wildebeestsightings.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/1.mp4
