The calving season has started in the Southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area, with the first wildebeest calves now being born across the plains of Ndutu and parts of Ngorongoro. These early arrivals mark the start of this critical stage in the Great Migration.

Fresh grass from the short rains is providing nutritious grazing for mothers and their newborns. Early sightings show small groups of calves in open areas, allowing them to feed while remaining alert to predators. This initial phase signals the beginning of population renewal and the continuation of the migration cycle.
