Sarara Camp Samburu

About Sarara Camp Samburu

Sarara Camp is located in the heart of the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy in Northern Kenya, offering an exceptional and intimate experience in one of the country’s most remote and pristine wilderness areas. The camp is nestled at the base of the Mathews Mountain Range and is surrounded by vast open landscapes and diverse wildlife. It was established in collaboration with the local Samburu community and focuses on sustainable tourism and conservation efforts. The camp’s location offers breathtaking views and an ideal base for wildlife viewing and cultural immersion.

Sarara Camp provides a serene and luxurious setting with six elegant tented suites, each featuring en-suite bathrooms, private verandas, and outdoor showers. The tents are designed to blend into the environment, offering comfort and seclusion without compromising the wild experience. For those seeking more privacy, Sarara House is available as a private retreat for families or small groups. With its own waterhole, Sarara House offers a unique and exclusive experience.

The camp’s community involvement extends beyond hospitality; it’s a leader in supporting local initiatives aimed at preserving the Samburu culture and wildlife. The eco-lodge plays a key role in wildlife conservation through partnerships with local communities, promoting sustainable practices, and providing employment to Samburu herders and guides.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Sarara Camp is during the dry season, from June to October and December to March. This period offers excellent game viewing opportunities as wildlife concentrates around water sources, making it easier to spot the animals. The dry season is also when the iconic Singing Wells take place, where the Samburu herders bring their cattle to the wells, singing traditional songs that echo across the region. This is a unique cultural experience that adds to the appeal of visiting during this period.

Though the dry season is ideal for game viewing, Sarara Camp remains a great destination year round, with the wet season offering a lush landscape and fewer tourists. The wet season, from November to May, provides a different perspective of the region, with vibrant green surroundings and a variety of migratory birds.

How to Get There

Sarara Camp is most conveniently reached by air. There are scheduled flights from Nairobi or other major Tanzanian airports to the Namunyak airstrip, which is approximately a 30 minute drive from the camp. This scenic flight offers stunning aerial views of the wilderness. Alternatively, guests can choose a road transfer from Nairobi, which typically takes 6 to 7 hours, depending on road conditions. For those who enjoy a more adventurous approach, the drive offers a unique introduction to the region’s landscapes and wildlife.
